... grate lost time
into a starchy juice
of timid words

God is carving mathematical functions on the outside of our cave!he claims and thrusts me
towards the curved threshold by the waist.
Listen!
The scratching gusts through me like stale leaves.
I point to their ancestors, dried and dormant,
in our ignimbrite enclosure. He takes a pestle to my cheek but one needs only eyes to see a home made a man’s mortar. With a blunt blade of half-frozen clay, he traces what he hears God say. Slicing his hands more than rock, he fractions a mouth into two sets of teeth on our wall and I recall how fondly, when it first rained, he unclasped the achiote fruit’s diamond lips, mixed its seeds’ copper tint with the mud in the pool of my hands so he might, his other selves, paint. How could he doubt, then, when I said | Perhaps it’s those? You cannot even imagine the kinds of tools in God’s use. |
The bowl was moulded
from Venus’ breast.
